Crew unlocking condition ideas?

So this is not an update quite yet but I'm merely looking for some ideas. I'm currently in the works of adding some actual permanent progression/unlocks to the game. So if you've got any good ideas on how to unlock some specific crew members to be your starting members, post in the comments.
The conditions shouldn't be anything too difficult or rare but not something that'd always unlock when you acquire said crew member. And of course would be good if they were actually related to the target crew member in some way or another.

For the handler, it's challenge could be getting a large number of birds.
trink could probably be accepting to reset the world 3 or so times in a single run
Diplomat could be unlocked by buying all cargo from the cargo trader event (doing this in early game shouldn't count, maybe during endless mode)
Something like rolling blank dice x amount of times in a row, or x amount of blank dice all at once to unlock the Quartermaster.
Picking up x amount of value 6 cargo in a row for Boy.
Losing a battle against a pirate to unlock Pirate.
Running into a reef X amount of times to unlock Navigator.
Having X amount of non-event encounters where you can't interact - like no anchovies, or no spice to unlock Mate.
Premise would be the player would need to experience multiple "bad" interactions/outcomes and they then get rewarded by having a crew member that would help prevent those outcomes.
for the one that give you extra rerolls (I forget the name) it could be something like not rerolling for the first 5 battles
or always rerolling for the first few battles
